At Eight PM Last Night

And Then I Rest

In my youth I had an image of where I would be so many decades later, meaning at my age now.  I saw myself sitting in a high backed easy chair, by a fire, across from the missus, reading a good book.

That vision came to me last night as I sat at my laptop in one room, reading Twitter on Brizzly. The missus was downstairs in her home office reading the New York Times while my son was at his desk, on his Apple reading heaven-knows-what.

This is not the image from the past because none of these things, laptops, NYT.com or Apple Computers existed back then.  Okay, way back then.

So, young people, as you sit and envision where you’ll be and what you will be doing in forty or fifty years, fahgetaboutit! It doesn’t exist yet.

Enjoy the now and the stuff that makes the now, time.

H1N1, Where We Were Standing When We Heard

DSC_0114

This is a photo I took to show the view from where we were standing when we heard the news that cases of the h1n1 Virus were found a few miles away.

The waiting room was an international petri dish.

It reflected in many ways, in modern dress, the crowds who once occupied Ellis Island, visible from where we stood.

They too were a petri dish, with public health officials waiting to shove tongue depressors into their throats.

No tongue depressors here.

The ferry upon which we sailed to Staten Island was fairly full.

They don't allow you to stay on board for the ride back. You need to leave and re-enter the terminal, so, it deposited us ashore directing us back around into Richmond County's St. George Terminal.

Just as we were settled back onto the same boat, with good perches for the photographers, we were told they were taking the boat out of service.

It was one more walk around where we joined the people gathered to take the next ferry. That’s when I took this snap. When the next ferry arrived from Manhattan, it spit out its human cargo, 2/3’s of which promptly walked around back into the terminal to join us.

What should have been a pleasant sail across Upper New York Harbor, with promised views of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and the churches of Brooklyn, turned into a dash for seats in the middle.

It was like riding on a wide body jet, in the center aisle.

When we spewed forth from the boat, I don’t know how many thousands of us, the crowd soon blended into the mass of tourists visiting lower Manhattan on this first really nice day of 2009.

If that many people suddenly showed up in our home town, it would be an event. Here they do it every half hour without a blip of notice.

We’ve Been Away Too Long

eggs 2

During a different lifetime, I think I am up to my fourth, we lived in the middle of all the action in Manhattan.

It’s not where I started but still I feel its from where I am.

That being said, I was sad to discover just now, reading The New Yorker’s RSS Feed, I found none of this week’s cartoons funny.

Not one.

What this means to me is we’ve been away too long.  The Billy Joel song, New York State of Mind is buzzing in my subconscious.  “The New York Times, The Daily NEWS.”

As with most thing, this too will pass.

A Sad Story

LiveJournal Tags:

In this morning’s NYT there is a story of a man purported to have Aspergers Syndrome and is focused on the workings of the New York City Transit System.

http://preview.tinyurl.com/6ey3j9

He is an adult with a long history of behavior and non-violent confrontation with the NYC TA and their  employees.  He has driven busses and subway trains along their routes.  He has made an effort to become part of the system.

The fact that he’s been allowed to do this over and over again shows he has the skill and knowledge to slip right into the role.  It appears to me there has to be a way to make him part of the system in a controlled role so that his “obsession” as the NYT is calling it, can be used in  a positive way.

Unfare Zemata Test

Source: WikipediaIt made no sense to me that Zemanta wasn't working on my blogger editor. I went back in for a second look and saw my No Script icon along the status bar had its red circle with slash markings. Once I opened it and set it to allow, wham the Zemanta bar appeared to the right of the editor. SO far, it has photgraphs such as this: L7 encircled. I think it's an album cover.

The articles listed below the editor are all about Zemanta, not surprising. They are from funkykaraoke.blogspot.com, fourstars.com, blogherald.com, readwriteweb.com, techcrunch.com, tadejhq.com. The first listed link is one day old and the last is two days old. Recent stuff.

If I change the subject to something like Leo Laporte, Petaluma, Sonoma, Marin counties California or the Democratic primary coming up in one of the midwestern states and Pennsylvania. If I mention the New York Times or the Guardian.uk.co then all of the choices on the bar suddenly changed.

Ah, I just discovered that when you click on the gallery selection, it changes, not adds a photo. I first had the L7 thumbnail, then a photo of Leo and then a photo of this clocktower in Petaluma.

Zemanta is cute, but, I don't see much use for it the type of blogs we publish.
